چکیده
Abstract Outbreaks of defoliating insects in low‐diversity tropical forests occur infrequently but provide valuable insights about outbreak ecology temperate environments and general. We investigated an extensive the endemic koa moth ( Scotorythra paludicola ), which defoliated trees Acacia ) over a third their range on Hawai‘i Island during 2013 2014. At Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, we observed dynamics its effects host trees, nutrient cycling, insectivorous consumers reforestation stands densely planted natural forest mixed ‘ōhi‘a Metrosideros polymorpha ). Contrary to predictions resource concentration hypothesis, caterpillar biomass defoliation severity were greater sites, where density was relatively low. Caterpillars preferentially consumed most palatable foliage type (phyllodes), initially refoliated with least (true leaves). Lightly small more quickly than did heavily ones opposite true for large also produced proportion phyllodes. Mortality greatest koa. Caterpillar frass caused larger increases soil nitrogen (N) phosphorus (P) availability, N fine‐textured soils. Foliar increased alien grasses under canopies compared away from native woody understory species. Bird activity influenced by flower abundance defoliation; birds switched outbreaking prey, they gained weight outbreak. Bat foraging times decreased outbreak, apparently because became satiated each night. Parasitoid wasps had little influence dynamics. Reducing grass cover increasing tree diversity would likely reduce impacts insect outbreaks similar perturbations forests.

Tropical Rainforest Ecology from a Canopy Perspective
Many processes that are fundamental to tropical rainforest maintenance and regeneration take place in the forest canopy. Recently developed access techniques afford biologists nondestructive means to document and quantify canopy biota and their accompanying activities and interactions. Results from studies involving within-canopy observations and measurements of nutrient cycling, epiphyte distr...

this study intends to investigate samuel beckett’s waiting for godot and endgame under the lacanian psychoanalysis. it begins by explaining the most important concepts of lacanian psychoanalysis. the beckettian characters are studied regarding their state of unconscious, and not the state of consciousness as is common in most beckett studies. according to lacan, language plays the sole role in ...
An Insect Nidovirus Emerging from a Primary Tropical Rainforest
Tropical rainforests show the highest level of terrestrial biodiversity and may be an important contributor to microbial diversity. Exploitation of these ecosystems may foster the emergence of novel pathogens. We report the discovery of the first insect-associated nidovirus, tentatively named Cavally virus (CAVV). CAVV was found with a prevalence of 9.3% during a survey of mosquito-associated v...
متن کاملCOVID-19 Outbreak in Africa: Lessons and Insights from the West African Ebola Virus Disease Epidemics
Over the years, the African continent has had to battle several outbreaks of infectious diseases in different countries. Some of the most deadly were the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreaks that occurred in West Africa between 2014 and 2016 affecting Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone and, more recently, from 2018 to 2020 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In the era of the COVID-19 pand...
